Hello I was hanging out watching my bees when I noticed a darker bee fly unto hive 1's board. Didn't think too much of it, but then he flew to hive 2's board and was hanging. Then he flew back to hive 1's board. Most of them seemed not to mind the fellow and he is too big to get into the either hive. Was wondering if he is a he, looks like it to me. Also if it is in fact a different bee? I have Carnies and some get dark but with this guy he almost has no bands.

I can only say that it's a drone.  lol  It's all new to me so I don't know much!

Most all hives will let "any" drone enter their domain, as long as drones are allowed in the house. :) d2

Drones are bar hoppers. They travel around going from hive to hive. Each hive workers will feed them and they move on. That's the way genetics are spread. ""Varroa also""
That drone could be from a hive 5 or 10 miles from yours, but his hive is probably feeding your drones.

Yes he was a far traveler, he never did get inside the hive. I closed house around 9pm and all was dark but he was still knocking on the door, lol. I use a swarm guard and he is just too big to get in. I wonder what kind of bee he is or was I will check if he is still there in the morning :)

Bees In Miami

It's a drone, as others have said.  No need to put a guard up.  The drones are dependent on the girls even for feeding.  He certainly won't rob anything.  They will either let him in, or not.  No need to worry.

That swarm guard is also trapping your drones inside. What iis your intention with the swarm guard?

BAH

My Drones are able to come in and out. That fellow was just too big, it is a hornet guard not a swarm guard,my mistake sorry, and works fine. The only problem I have found, with this local design, is that worker bees sometimes have to work harder when pulling the dead bigger Drones out. When I do my inspections I don't see any dead bees inside so I assume that they are getting them out fine. I also sit and watch my bees in my yard quite a bit, about 3-4 hours a day and see many Drones out. That is why I was able to identify that this bee isn't one of ours  ;). My Carnies are smaller and even the Drones look smaller than others to me. I was tempted to measure the fellow this morning, but said "nah" he is just doing what bees do. Yeah he is still there getting fed. I was told he will leave today when he flies out to mate with a virgin queen and not worry that Drones like to bar hop for the honey!  :cheer: But back to the question... I hope to keep the hornets out  :-D
