Been watching videos on YouTube about splits and have been watching some of Mel's info out there.  I must be missing or daydreaming when they talk about it, but they talk about moving the hive with the queen in it two miles away from the splits.  Why is this? Also, is anyone using his OTS method?  Seems simple and straight forward.  Just curious and thanks!

I have tried to use the method once.  I attribute my failure to my own inability to recognize the young enough brood.

The reason you move the new hive at least 2 miles is so the bees won't come back to the old location, or get lost. The rule is when moving a hive..."less that 2 feet or more than 2 miles".

I've been using the OTS method for splits and mite control for three yrs now. All I can say is practice is the key.
Google MDA splitters for his website, also he has published a new book which has a more step by step of his methods (and plenty of pics for us knuckle draggers lol) than his website.
Can't ever say that bk'n ain't a learning experience!
