I am starting a new package April 10 and have both established comb and new frames.  Question: should I use all established comb in the initial deep and then new frames when adding a second deep or alternate new and established on both boxes?

I would give the bees the best chance you can. I would start them on all established comb with new comb in the second box.  -Mike

Mike, the new frames are just new foundation does this affect your opinion? Thanks for the reply!

No, I would still start with the established comb. It is less work to be done before the queen can start laying.  -Mike

Drawn comb belongs in hives.  Drawn comb is perishable.  Combs with stores are still more perishable.  They belong in a hive that can use them and guard them.

I have 20 frames, ten of drawn comb and ten of new foundation. Should I mix them up in each deep?

Michael Bush

Give them all drawn comb in one box for one package if you have that much drawn comb.  When they have filled 80% of that one box with brood and honey and pollen, add another box with as much drawn comb as you have.  When you run out of drawn comb for the next box, fill the sides with frames with foundation (or frames with no foundation and comb guides).
