How are your bees fairing? Did you get a satisfactory amount of honey this year?

Bob Wilson

I don't know yet.
This year I am not going to pull honey until the goldenrod flow begins...usually mid September here.
I have had trouble in the past with too much uncapped nectar on the frames when I pull in the summer. That may be due to the long langstroths I used in the past (now I am using Layens) or perhaps it is because of middle Georgia's high humidity. I am hoping this year that it will be better capped, and at the same time I can set up the hives for winter, leaving them enough resources.

I just started fall brood nest inspections, so I'll know more about colony health in the next couple of weeks.  I'm having a great honey harvest.  I'm not done crushing and straining yet, but I'm up to 15.5 gal. already, and I still have a couple of supers to process, and maybe one or two more to pull if the fall flow is good.

The bees seem to be doing good but I will know better soon after I do my fall treatments. Honey production has been great, so far I have 45 gallons in buckets with about another 20 on hives. With the rain we have been getting the last week and a half has me encouraged for a good fall flow, I'll be putting supers on in a couple of weeks.

So, I had a hard time keeping the bees home this spring and the honey production showed. Almost double the production hives and not near the honey I made last year.

As of this writing the 2 yards I was working with as trying for 1 treatment a year are crashing hard. Im assuming none will make it to January.

All other yards seem to be doing well though. All in all I cant complain.

Not trying to be picky, but people see things wrong and it starts to look right to them.  It's faring.  Not fairing.  A fairing is a thing on a motorcycle that keeps the wind off of you.

Thanks for your >not trying< to being picky reply.
I will offer you an explanation that you can accept or reject at your discretion.

When in a hurry and using my iPhone, I sometimes use voice dictate; Being from the deep South, and with a natural born Southern accent, (just a figure of speech Mr Bush), my non Southern friendly, programmed phone, often accepts and dictates words differently than intended. Sometimes I catch it, and sometimes I don?t. This was a I didn?t catch situation. I do hope you got the meaning of the topic? I am assuming you did! (Considering your non-picky reply)   lol

By the way how are your bees >faring<?  😊

My bees are faring really well, thanks.  It would be nice if they had a fairing to keep the wind off of them...

Mr Bush I?m sure fairing would be beneficial to your bees at your location, considering the harsh Winter conditions you have described experiencing there.  .  I can?t help but wonder why you haven?t already put fairing for your bees into action? Perhaps the innocence of my post as explained earlier considering (fairing/faring) will influence you in a positive way; working for the good of you and your bees?
You don?t have to thank me. lol  😁

Bill it?s nice to hear your other yards are doing so well! The enlightening revelation of the condition of the two yards in question are very appreciated! This is exactly what is needed, the sharing of information both good and bad!  We all can learn from this.
Thanks for sharing this valuable information.

Are you sure that he has none up?

All I have to go on is what he posted. How are your bees faring Terri? I had a satisfactory year, considering the time I put into them. I got enough honey for myself and enough to give some family members. Bees are doing well.

Terri Yaki

I started with one, had a high of three and now have one, which seems to be very healthy. That is my swarm hive so I figured the boss has already overwintered here once. I got my OAV tool yesterday and feel like it will make managing the mites a lot easier and will hopefully have better results next year.

I have fairings around my hive. The garage on one side, tree line on two others and the house on the other. They're tucked in pretty safe there.

Michael Bush

I have them all up against each other, but otherwise no wind break.  It's a nice idea. I should buy some corn cribbing and put up a snow fence.

Mr Bush I applaude your success in keeping bees in your extremely cold winter conditions. Your success says a lot in itself. Are you still touring and giving lectures/speeches?

What would be enlightening is if I looked at the mite load on whats left. (I know Ill probably get flak for not) But the goal was to see, just to try. and if I check its not meaningful for what im trying to accomplish. If just 1 or 2 pull through then I have breeder stock for next year. We shall see.

My honey numbers are finally officially in.  I just jarred up the last batch from my deadouts, and the total comes to a satisfyingly round number of 100 qts./25 gallons.  I've got some in pints, some in quarts, and some in buckets.  That was from basically 7 colonies, so I'm feeling really good about it.  Hopefully I don't have any more deadouts, not only because, you know, I want my bees to live, but I'm REALLY tired of harvesting honey.  It's rare I have jars labeled "November".

For personal consumption, that would be about 1/2 gallon/week. Do you use that much?
