I've never bothered to reduce the size on the horizontal hives, although it's probably a good idea.  A follower board (better described as a division board) would work.  Just cut one to fit all the way from top to bottom and side to side and put it in where you want the hive to end.  I'd leave some empty bars on the other side in case they figure out a way through.
