 This will be my first year in beekeeping and I don't get my 2 hives till April (can't hardly wait.). I'm thinking of going with starter strips in the new hives and if i can get more bees or make a split I want to start a TBH hive to use for chunk comb. Also if things go well I want to try to raise a queen or two just so I can be ready for the next year when (I hope ) things are going smoother for me as a new beekeeper.

Hey Dan:

Thanks for starting off the new forum with a post. I think you'll be fine, you have a nice climate which greatly helps in getting started, the first season is so critical especially if you have queen rejection issues, which can cost you dearly in time in cooler climates.

You have some realistic goals and I think you will have plenty of support - I've missed you lately in Voice Chat, I've seen you on but not always when I've been there - hope to talk soon. Best wishes.

Howdy Dan,

I am also starting out as a new beekeeper this April (the 7th!), when I with my wife to get my bees.  This site has been invaluable to me.  I also bought the book by Kim Flottum that is very good.

Finally, I found a local bee club not too far away, so I am going to go to their meetings and get some good advice (armed with what I already know from all these great people).

I look forward to hearing how your efforts go, and I will share mine, too!

I have a question I have...

I'll be getting 2 hives that are already in 10 frame deeps and want to use foundationless frames.

1.When I add the 2nd deep where/how do I get the starter strips so that they will make the right size comb?
2.Can I use thin surplus as starter strips in the honey supers or is there a better way?
3.Since there are new hives should I feed the any brood builder when I get them home and if so for how long?

>1.When I add the 2nd deep where/how do I get the starter strips so that they will make the right size comb?
----You can buy it by the pound from dadant in high springs.

>2.Can I use thin surplus as starter strips in the honey supers or is there a better way?
----I think this would work.

>3.Since there are new hives should I feed the any brood builder when I get them home and if so for how long?
-----You probaly will not need to feed in april.  There should be enough forage then.
