dump a half soda bottle of gas down the hole and follow it with a match, they sound like yellow jackets in the ground and they don't need a reason to sting.

I like explosions  and danger  as much as anyone, but PUHLEEEZE do not take this advice! If they WERE yellow jackets, which, based on the photo, THEY AREN'T, you'd need just a pint of fuel and dirt to cover their hole, to eliminate them...BTW it is the FUMES from the gasoline that kills them.  :-P
If you don't want to get hurt, don't ride!

You know, depending on what's down there, I have to change my vote to maybe they are honey bees.  Yesterday I saw a hive nesting in the ground, too... well... not actually in the ground... but in a hollowed out root, which was basically at ground level.
