I am really unhappy with the amount of flies that are around my hive (especially for Feb...). Can't think of where they would be coming from - no trash piles etc. in the vicinity that I am aware of.

I checked the upper deep today (its 64 degrees here today!) and the hive appears to be in good health with good honey stores.

Anyone know if the flies might be indicative of any problems? I assumed they were feasting on the dead bees in front of the hive but I am actually seeing them there less than hanging out on the sides of the hive. Have not noticed any going into or from the entrance and the girls are flying strong today.

Thanks.

you probably have a good size pile of dead bees on your bottom board.  when the weather is warmer, you'll have to scrape them off.  you'll understand the flies when you smell the dead bees

Oh great - something to look forward to!

That makes sense - I had forgotten that there would still be bodies inside - thanks.

Are you sure it's not a "New Jersey" thing you got going on there. Most around here all say about how things stink over there in New Jersey....  :lau:

The rest of the state already considers Philly part of New Jersey.... ;) Or at least were willing to give it to you.
