Most all the frames I use now are either sc wired wax or foundation-less.  I bought a used hank crank extractor.  What is going to happen if I put the frame in??  Big fat mess, or nice honey?

Thanks
Shar

I have heard you can extract foundationless frames but, would love to hear from some one that has actually done it.

It can be done, if the comb is connected to the frame on at least 3 sides and you go cautiously.   I know many disagree,  but I find spending the time up front to wire your foundationless frames makes for easier work down the road with less excitement.

Just like 100% of foreclosures happen to houses with mortgages,  100% of my comb blowouts have happened with unwired comb.

I also recommend that the comb be attached on at least three sides. Spin slowly but in a steady manner. Don't rush.

I would think a radial extractor would also be a better bet than a tangentant extractor

For foundationless frames in an extractor one should follow these guidelines:
1. Ridgid comb, not shoft, at least one month old.
2. Attached to 3 sides of the frames.
3. Radial extractor preferred.
4. Use ramp switch, staft slow and increase speed gradually (good idea anytime).
5. Ramp extractor speed down to off (also a good idea anytime).
6. Use of uncapping knife, of some kind, or uncapping fork is assumed.

Mine is an older hand crank...I bought it because it really seemed like a good price. I am hoping to have a decent amount of surplus this year.  It is the kind you have to turn frames, is that tangential?

And all of that is true of wired wax as well...
