 Hi Everyone !
I'm building my first frameless hive, so I can catch the bees in the attic of a friend's house. My friend told me that the bees have been there for about seven years. I need info on how big the hive should be? I saw some pixs of JP and his hive seems lots bigger than Barre Hive.   Also, how do I attact the combs in to the top bars? And should I save all comb? The roof is about 20' high and I have to do it from the outside because there is no access to the attic.
Thanks
Andy

Sometimes when there is no access, you have to make one. You need to find out where the bees are, they may not be accessible from a convenient location for you.

Where are you located? You might add your location to your profile. It will be quite warm in the attic in some parts of the country. Are they really in the attic or the soffits. 7 years gives them a chance to have an extensive amount of comb. With no dedicated access how are you going to make an assessment? Can you see in from the gable vents? Good luck and let us know what you find. We always enjoy hearing how these thing play out.

Bruce, I live in San Jose( N of California).  I have not move them yet because I'm working on building a Bees vac. I still don't know what's standard size of the hive. Should I just follow  the Barre Hive instruction? 12"x12" seems too small to me, though.

I may be misunderstanding this, but if your just looking for a way to use the comb from the cutout, you can still do that with a traditional lang hive. Just cut the comb the shape of the frame and secure it with rubberbands. If your not talking about this, I'm not sure how you intend to go about using/ attatching the comb that you obtain?

Actually, I have never seen a Lang Hive before. What I'm intending to do is to tie the comb into the bar( just a plain piece of wood). I've already finished building the hive 17"x17", with 9 bars in it. Pretty big, ha? Do you think it's possible something like that? I wonder what JP would do with something like this?
