Not sure if this should be here or equipment....Well I'm looking at getting a used extractor.  It's a Root Automatic 4 frame honey extractor.  Haven't seen it personally yet but it looks like it was built like a tank from pictures.  They say it has a lot of rust on it though.  Can I clean this up and paint with something food grade and still use it?

Yes, there is a food grade epoxy you can paint the inside with. I've seen it at beekeeping supply companies. Its not a unusual problem.

Thanks.  Looked around on Google for anything about them.  Found an old Bee Culture that mentioned Root Automatic.  Published 1909.

clean off the rust and coat it with a good coat of camcoat. Then you should be good to go

Well I'm not sure I'm going to get it now.  They want to much money for it.  Based off age, time, money, gas, and my own personal energy cleaning it up I'm not sure it's worth it.  A lot easier and cheaper to just rent one from the local association until I get more hives.

You should be able to find one around for 150.00, with out too much trouble. just keep looking in craigs list. and other sites as well as this one. someone might be upgrading andyou could get a nice used from soneone.

Wood Chopper, I would love to pick one up like that for $200! The one I was looking at is in pretty bad shape and they want $100 for it.  It has a ton of rust and is an antique, literally.  Keeping my open for one though.  The local association rents 4 frame tang extractors out for $10 for three days.  I'll stick with that for now.  Can't justify buying a brand new extractor because I've only got three hives.  Hope that number will increase quickly.
