I have a booming hive. Running four deeps (two for supers). Vorroa drop rate of 10 per day.

Can someone recommend a formic acid treatment schedule for me?  I ordered the Mite Away pads.  I'm assuming that I treat after the fall flow (Late September in Chicago?).  Do you treat again in Spring?

Thanks,

Ken

The answer depends on your mite load.  Once that approaches your limit of comfort you treat.  Some years you may not have to use formic acid at all.  Be sure to read the manufacturers instructions to ensure the treatment is effective but not lethal to your bees.

In the Brushy Mountion webinar on 6-18-09 Kim Flottum said to do a 3 day sticky board.  Count all the droped mites and divide by 3.  If you have more than 40 for a large hive  20 for a medium hive and 15 or 20 for a small hive you need to treat.
