I have some hives 60 miles from home that were short on stores. I am trying the dry sugar and newspaper system for the first time, i also put a 3/4 in. shim on the top super to give more room for the sugar. My question is will this work if you have screen bottomboards or when they eat a hole in the paper the sugar will fall through the sbb? I sprayed the paper around the edges with one to one sugar water with HBH before i poured the sugar on and also sprayed the pile of sugar lightly. Any advice will be appreciated. Jack

How much sugar?  I add an empty box (mine are all eight frame mediums) for the sugar so it holds about 30 pounds or more.  I lay a layer on and spray that and then another layer and spray that, so that it will clump and not "hourglass" through.  If you only have a 3/4" shim, that's hardly enough sugar to be worth the trouble.  I'd add an empty box on top of that and put in another 30 pounds.

Thanks Michael, that's what i was looking for. I knew a five pound bag wouldn't be enough and was wondering how much to put on. I am going back up there to put deer stands up next week and will take care of things then. Thanks again. Jack
