Have built them for others, but don't have any feedback to share.  I think they mostly bought them for insurance against laying workers. ;)

i just shook out my laying worker hives and that was fine.  for someone with only a couple of hives, i can see where something like this would be a good idea.  even when requeening, it might be worth it since there can be a high failure rate and the queens are EXPENSIVE!   :-D

I built one last summer according to Robo and Irwin's plans.  I had a hive that just wouldn't take a queen.  There were no laying workers that I could tell, it just killed each queen I put in there after releasing her (I lost two queens this way).  I used the introduction frame on the third queen, left her in it a week and then released her - and the hive has been right since.

I like the way Robo's design has the rod over the queen cage to secure it over the one that Brushy sells that talks about adding wax to hold if needed. Also looks like one side is closed on theirs unless it is just the way the pic. looks. I would think the queens pheromones would travel through the hive quicker with the way Rob's frame has screen on both sides. Nice Job Rob :cheer:

Hmm.  I am confused (2nd year beekeeper).  I thought the pheromones from open brood - and not the queen - were what suppressed the workers' reproductive development and egg laying?  If that is correct, then how does this device help?  I see no room for egg laying and new open brood.

I fixed my laying worker hive by introducing a frame of open brood a week for 2-3 weeks, and then introducing a new queen with a home-made push-in cage over about-to-hatch brood.

there are any number of ways to work on the problem.  the push cage over foundation is good, the replacement of brood is ok too if you don't mind sacrificing that much brood over time.  shaking them out so that they must join other hives also works.

i am very fond of simple and i can see this as a good way to introduce new queens any time.  there is a high failure rate with requeening.  i would rather sacrifice some days of laying for saving the cost of another queen....not that i buy queens  :-)  push cage works for requeening also.

this looks simple to make and seems like it would be a handy thing to have around.

Agreed.  I like the device for re-queening in general.  I'm just curious how it's supposed to help with laying workers.  Either it doesn't, or (more likely!) my understanding of LW hives needs adjusting.

Any adjusters out there?  ;)
