It's single digits every night so far this entire year - which I know is balmy compared to you upper mid westerners - anyway I took a listen to my 1 1/2 hives with a stethoscope, and so far so good.  Before you know it time will come to pay March rent and the maples will be blooming...

I know this is lame, but what are you gonna do? It's the dead of winter.

Up north here in michigan they dont die in jan.  Its feb and march that worry me.  dont let your guard down.  On a sunny windless day pop the top and if the cluster is all the way up to the top, feed them.  I use sugar boards or fondant.

Oh, I'll look in on them when the weather breaks good.  But, I already have dry sugar on top of the frames for good measure.  The bigger hive hasn't had much use for it, but the smaller one has already eaten 6-8 pounds since early November.  Probably because the big hive robbed the small one in October.
