Pollen Patties

I only have 2 hives, and I'm trying to get Pollen Patties for the Spring.

I see from the major players that the minimum I have to buy is 10.

Are their any other sources/methods out there where I can by 1 or 2 pollen patties?

Buying one patty is pointless. Just buy a box of 10 and hold on to the rest. Eventually you will need them.

Or if you are set on only getting one, see if someone from your local beekeeping association can lend you one, or sell it to you.

when I go to the store I might only need 3 eggs but I buy the dozen use the three store the rest for later use. same with the box of pollen patties. use what you need put the rest in the freezer for later use.

Find a sideliner or commercial beek near you and they will probably be nice enough to sell you a couple. If there is a beekeeping group in your area, you could also contact them and see if they could help. For two patties I can see why you would not want to pay for 10 plus shipping but....

You should be able to keep em in the freezer if you buy 10 so they dont go to waste.

buy the mix and only make what you need. or, do a search on here. there are some recipes.

do you really need them? i found that the pollen comes so early that i don't need to feed pollen. ask some local beekeepers and see. you may save yourself some work and money.

The idea is that you might want to supplement with some pollen patties so the bees can get a jump on brood rearing in early Spring....although it really depends upon your location, the food stores in the hive, and what the weather is doing. If the bees are finding other sources of pollen, they often won't touch the pollen patties. Mine are already finding lots of pollen somewhere, and we don't even have any leaves or blooms on the trees.

I want to thank every one for there help except this jerk who obviously doesn't care about helping any one and is a rude guy. Ok..... Dracono, we do not refer to other people "jerks" or any other names in our forums - please read over our bilaws in the first forum on the main page if you have any questions.

In the same respect, to those who say things like "SEARCH THIS" or "GOOGLE THAT" well, that is a really weak reply, one that isn't needed. With the number of members we have, someone will answer a new members questions, that why we have an interactive forum - your telling them to search it is not helpful and frankly gives a poor reflection of what we do here. It is much better to keep silent on a given post rather than tell someone to go and search it.

So please, rule one is simple, be nice and try to be helpful - let's all keep those in mind. Thanks.

My intention wasn't to be rude. I apologize Dracono.

However, I don't think asking individuals to do basic searches before they ask questions is unnecessary. Probably not needed, but I don't htink I"m in the wrong by suggesting that you look for the answer yourself. If you have looked up something and don't understand it, I have no problem answering a question, or even passing it by and moving on. But, rather basic questions can easily be answered just by searching 'pollen patties.' In fact, that's why the search button is there.

If that isn't the consensus of the rest of the group, I yet again apologize. I won't bring it up again.

I could, however, answer a question like "what's up with _____" in book form. There is a big difference between questions like "what are pollen patties", "when do I add pollen patties", "how do I use pollen patties", "what pollen patties are the best" on the one hand and "what's up with pollen patties" on the other. It's difficult, if not impossible to answer a question like that without answering in book form. Might I suggest asking more specific questions in order to get more specific answers. I don't mean to be rude, just a suggestion to help you get the information that you are looking for.

Pollen patties are blessing and a cures,
if you feed to early you have to keep feeding them till the real pollen comes out, if you need to build up brood say second week in feb if weather is good. then 21 days later your hive is great shape. just what your needs are for your bees. I buy mine Just because the Mrs. does not like the mess from making my own.

Its the new millennium and information technology is the new wave. Todays new generation uses short hand slang for everything. Like it or not you end up using some of it. Unlike when I or most of us here grew up, todays youth dont go to the books. Go to the library and you wont seem many people under thirty unless there on the pc's. Forums and blogs are everywhere. Yes you can search but you can as easily or easier just ask, I took a few classes at a tech. school and books are basically obsolete now, period.

I guess my point is, I just dont see anything wrong with the question. I think Dracono simply was saying that pollen patties were foreign to him and he was wondering what they were and what their purpose was, or at least thats how I interpreted it.

and as for it is a bit hard for me to go to a library and get books for I am on a limeted income I use what ever resources I can get. and seance there was a topic about it already up and ppl was talking about it I was sure that some one would be happy to help me understand what they was.

Its like moms apple pie. There are all kinds of recipes out there. You can buy them pre-made, or make your own. I believe most are subs (not real pollen) and some contain a percentage of real pollen which acts as a attractant to the bees. If I have enough time I want to make a pollen trap and use as much real pollen as possible. If you go to Michel bushes website http://www.bushfarms.com/bees.htm He covers most of these basic issues or practices. I would read through the whole website if you have time. You can also go to google pull the more menu down, and click on books. Search, honeybees, beekeeping or the like and refine you search to full view only and you will get old but great books in their entirety to read. Dont think because these books are old that they are not of value. Most of the information is still adequate. You will find that there is enough stuff to read to keep your mind busy for a long, long time.
