So, how does one go about getting the lid off of the syrup can that comes with package bees, so that it can be reused?  Is it even possible?  I have hammered, pulled with pliers, tapped with a punch - everything I can think of and all I have done is destroyed cans.

i would toss it and use a gallon glass pickle jar lids come off them easy :-D

Sorry.  They're a one shot deal.  I use a mason jar with a punched lid.  That way I can see the level of the syrup and refill as needed.

I never use it except while they are still in the package.  I have refilled many for that use.  If it has the rubber grommet and cloth type you pop the grommet out, refill and pop it back in.  If it's the simple holes punched I make a hole barely big enough to pour the syrup in and then plug the hole with some softened, warmed beeswax.  After I install the package I throw away the ones with the holes and keep the ones with the grommets for next  year...

Thank you all for replies - you have likely saved me from a number of 'Wile E Coyote' moments, wrestling with those cans!

People who use "cans" for feeders usually buy the empty paint cans (clean new ones) from the hardware store...
