Hive in the open?

These bees were drawing comb in the open. Is this typical of some bee's?

Yes, they can do that sometimes. There are lots of pictures on this site with open hives like that and JP has a video or two about taking them down.

This video just makes me sad, though. Have none of these people ever heard of beekeepers?

I am just so glad the city was able to kill all those killer bees. Those 2 men were probable allergic to bees and with really mean bees, I am sure they would have been able to survive the cold winter coming up. And if they had not cut that tree down, there may have been another hove move in next week. :-D

Bjorn, if you click the blue text below the vid it will take you to the site. It really is sad to have to kill them all especially when you have a lift truck on site to remove the limb latter. That would have been a nice piece of art to hang on the wall.

Now you are right on that being a nice piece of art. That would look cool. If you could get the dead brood and the wasp spray out of it. I am surprised the city killed the bees. What city are they in?

A my place of work we had a few scout bees around the property a couple of weeks ago then a few days later this swarm flew in to nest under the roof eaves of the office building. Tons of bees swarmed the parking lot and around the building for about 20 min. It was pretty neat to see.

apparently all you beekeepers out there have been doing it all wrong. if you encounter a swarm in a tree you're supposed to kill all the bees and cut down the tree. :roll:

Well, lets say I get paid 3 hundred for removing the bees, how much do I charge for cutting down the tree afterward?

I loved the part where the one touched the comb and said "eww...sticky" with a wave of his limp wrist! (not that there's anything wrong with that :-D)

That video almost made me cray. So sad. I am a former newpaper reporter and I can't believe how ignorant reporters are when it comes to covering these kinds of stories. And the City ought to know better as well.

I would hope some beekeeper in Albany took the time to call in and set the TV station straight on the travesty that just took place and the disservice the coverage did when it comes to handling a feral hive. People who watched that report will think that is the way people are supposed to react if a bee bothers them while they are sitting on their porch. Hard to believe they were that bothered.

Paperman, I'm removing an external colony tomorrow and maybe Friday. As mentioned those could have been saved. The thing with external colonies is that just about any beekeeper can remove them. Nothing to open up.

This happened in Albany,GA this week. Same town as the tree bees. Maybe there is something to the bees there?

Elderly Man Killed By Swarm Of Bees

ALBANY, Ga. -- An elderly man in southwest Georgia is dead after being stung more than 100 times by honeybees while cleaning a yard.

Authorities say 73-year-old Curtis Davis died Monday morning in Dougherty County. Authorities say he was cleaning up burning brush with a tractor when he hit a beehive.

Family members called for help after being unable to reach Davis because of the large number of bees. Albany Fire Department battalion chief Marty Leverett says emergency workers put on protective gear and try to help Davis.

A beekeeper was brought in to help Davis and kill the bees.
