I do have a question for you sir. Both this site and the previous survivor site were pretty closed in. The other site was a closed in soffit. How do the bees cool the colonies in your hot, hot summers? Or is ventilation during the summer overrated? You got me a wonderin.

Jay, later on in summer when its quite warm you will see many bees on the outside of the hive bearding and fanning to cool things a bit. Of course at that time flows are down as well, bee numbers are up and you have more bees with less to do because of a dearth.

I believe in what the bees tell me, so in a sense, ventilation is perhaps over rated, at least down here.

I mainly use solid bottom boards & I know a fellow beek in Brookhaven, Ms who uses all solid bottoms and keeps reducers on his hives year round. His winters are a touch colder than mine but it gets downright hot up there during summer as well.

From what I gather from bee forums like this, ventilation is actually more important in much colder temps.

Both of these survivor cutouts sure didn't have much of openings for the hive to fan through, like they would with a standard hive opening. More like your beek friend in MS with the entrance restricted in the summer.

I think it was Finski or Grid who mentioned that varroa doesn't like heat. I think I remember that correctly. It makes me wonder if they survived so long because the hive temp was hot in the summer.

Yes, I believe ventilation is needed in the winter up here to get the moisture out so it can't condense and drip on the cluster, but I am wondering about opening up my hives so much in summer. Things that make you go, hmmmmmmmmmm.  :-D
