9 frame spacing

Anyone have experiance starting a new hive, with foundation, 9frame spacing. I have read good and bad..Have a good day..thanks, dl

Are you talking about those metal 'spacers' used to eliminate one frame from a 10 frame? If so, I got rid of mine several years ago when I began downsizing from deeps to mediums, from foundation to foundationless, from 10 frame to 8 frame. Clean up can be a real pain with those things in place. I like having the ability to determine "where I want" to put frames on an 'as needed" basis. The spacers don't offer that option. So, I don't use them. I know some love them but not me.

If you are starting out with foundation only they will build burr comb between the frames and make a pretty good mess of things.

Put 10 frames in the ten frame box and let them draw the comb out (push the frames together), next year if you are still wanting to try 9 frames them you can put the drawn comb back in. With the drawn comb in place they will continue to draw it out past the frame sides which makes it easier to uncap with a hot knife.

...and with 9 frame spacing, they'll pack more honey into one super...like maybe five pounds more.

Start with 10 frames and when they are ready, take one off. But it is for honey not for brood.
