I got a call about a felled tree that had bees in it (and let the tree folks know about it as soon as it hit the ground). We went out to remove the bees so they could finish up removing the tree. I'm afraid we weren't able to save much comb...it was badly damaged...but we were able to vacuum up a good 10lbs of bees. I don't know if we sucked up the queen or not yet, I'm giving them a few days to settle before looking.

"In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American...There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag...We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people."

Nice Job Scott and Peg. To bad that more of the brood could not be saved but at least you saved about 40,000 bees to forage another day.

I went to check on the queen status today and found an almost empty box. The good part is that they joined the pop up bees (that seriously needed a population boost after they swarmed). I'm thinking we didn't get queenie although we took every bee we saw...she was probably in with the smashed up mess. All worked out great though and we'll be cutting out the camper bees soon.

Wally, Peg tries her hardest, but I'm a stubborn ol' coot :-D

This was similar to what I helped to do last Spring. A very old oak tree fell down in a storm and when the man who was cutting the tree started to cut on limbs, out came bees.

We did the very same thing you did, found the beginning and end of the hive by chainsawing slowly until we saw the hive. Opened up the limb and cut out the smashed up comb. We scooped up with our hands as many bees as possible and believing we had the queen, we set up a super next to the limb and went back at night. Yes, we got the queen when we scooped them up and every bee was in the super and I got to keep this oak tree hive. They are very strong and somewhat feisty. My first truly feral hive.

You have some fancy equipment there to work with. Helps to make the job go better.

Thanks for sharing this

Great Job.  What a tree, too.  Make sure you post any more cutouts you do.  That was fun to watch.

Thanks Scott and Peggy.

Now I know what I did wrong on a tree last year.  :)

As with JP's, these are so much appreciated on yet another snowy morning.
