Combined two weak hives

I combined two weak hives today with a sheet of newspaper between them.  I did put a couple of slits in the paper to give the girls a head start.  Now should I remove the barrier anytime soon or let the bees do it?  It's my first time pinching a queen, but the combined hive will hopefully produce some excess honey.

If you provided both halves with an entrance/ventilation, then just leave it.  They will take care of it.
