The biggest differene in keeping bees now compared to grandma's days---- is the pest (varroa, SHB etc) we have that plague the bees today. Most complimentary of foriegn countries!

He is simply saying that keeping bees today is different then 30 years ago because we now have to deal with varroa mites and the small hive beetle and other pests like killer bees(the african honeybee) and others.  All the pests we have today are native to foreign countries.  Varroa comes from asia in the pacific ocean area, and Small hive beetles (shb) comes from Africa.  30 years ago the worst thing was american foul brood and wax moths.  Both I have never had any problem with.  I cant imagine how easy beekeeping would have been back then.
