stolen hives

yesterday morning i went to the farm to check on some of my hives to put some supers on and to feed my fish.i go there just about everyday and have ,well had 65 hives there.on the way home i noticed what looked like one of my top on side the road so i turned around and it was. i have 12 hives and 4 nucs 1/2 mile from there .so i went to check  and 4 hives and all my nucs  were gone.i just can't believe this.well it happens but i have a hunch who it is and will find out soon. didn't go today because im not feeling good and have a fever but soon as i get better i will find out who it is and when i do  :evil:     schawee

This is what jails were made for.  To bad thieves get off with a slap on the wrist.  Dirty little sons of ######'s

I had this same problem a couple of years ago, I found a way to have constant observation of my hives and I didn't have to sit around and wait.  I purchased a digital game camera and placed it near my remaining hives and lo and behold I got some of the best pictures you ever saw of the thief at work and it was enough to convict the nut job of agriculture theft which resulted in the return of my hives and him serving 18 months.  Now I have one or two at each out yard and trust me word get around.

Who steals bee hives?  Another beek? 

The general public seems paranoid enough of bees as it is, it would seem unlikely to me they would be up for stealing hives.  I would think to successfully steal them, you would have to know what you're doing, own a bee suit, know how to seal up a hive, how to strap up hives, and how to move such heavy things.  Finally what economic value would a hive(s) have to the general public?

Beeks strike me as usually being exceptionally friendly, helpful, nice people. So it pains me to hear of this sort of thing.

Not to mention that hives are not particularly easy things to steal.

We had a Sherrif's deputy stealing 1 or 2 hives from hives all over his area, down in Palatka, FL. He was caught because he had hives that were stamped with State hive markings that he didn't file off. He was convicted of a felony for removing the markings. The theft was a mister meaner, (how ever they are spelled) removing the stamps was a felony.

I am with BlueBee.  Who would want to steal 4 hives and 4 nucs but another beekeep?  Vandals just like to push'em over, as has happend to me before.  To actually steal the hives, someone would have to know what they were doing and come prepared.

You could check the hospital emergency room to see if anyone showed up with an unusually large number of stings as would probably have happend if some took them who didn't know what they were doing?

Sorry to hear this Schawee.

With a cover blown off and only 4 hives and 4 nucs taken, I would think the thief used a smaller pickup. A larger pickup could have held more.

If you catch the thief, you might consider sitting him/her down in front of your hives (for observation purposes) and give the thief a few straight shots of bourbon (its OK to spill some on the thief.) -Mike
