Cool looking tree. Does it produce any fruit?

the-ecohouse.com, I think the Yellow Gum is named for the colour of the inner bark, not the flower, if that's what you were refering to.

Doug, these are all Eucalypts or Gum trees (colloquially). In the second last photo, the Yellow Gum with the pink flowers, you can see the woody "gum nuts" that are the base of the flowers, these are just a hard seed capsule and are not edible.

Hey Doug

Only good thing these trees produce is Honey  :)

and plenty of it when we have had so much rain for a change

Lone

Thanks, Eco.  That's worth the wait.

Nice pics! Always good to see some gum trees in flower.

The yellow gum you have in the last two photo's looks to me like Eucalyptus Torquata (Coral Gum). Yellow gum at least around here refers to Eucalyptus Leucoxylon also known as Blue Gum or Ironbark.

Is Christmas Mallee given that name because it flowers at Christmas time?

Do you know how gum trees vary in their nectar/pollen production?

Also, do you reckon you could update your location?

Hey Johnny, thanks mate, i'm going to make more of an effort this year to capture all the flowers i see and times they flower posting them here

I thought it might be Coral Gum as well but as far as i can tell its only found in WA?

It would be Pink Iron Bark – Eucalyptus sideroxylon or Yellow Gums – Eucalyptus leucoxylon

Xmas mallee, its proper name Eucalyptus socialis, all the beeks call it xmas "gold" mallee here, it starts late November and runs through till late January, massive flows

There is quite a bit of variance in production from gum trees, mallee trees are super producers, i cant believe the flows coming from some of these sites in the middle of the boonies

I'm in the Mallee Vic. how do you update your location?

bernsad

Eco, to update your location you need to go to the Profile tab and then edit your "Forum Profile Information"

Is there anything in the Little Desert that flowers in June/July?

It looks like Oz is going camping.  In Winter.  With binoculars.

Lone

Or you could just google. But it's not nearly as much fun.    http://www.littledesertlodge.com.au/index.php?id=wildflowers

The more pictures I see of the mallee the more I'd like to go there again.

Hahah it's a great time of year to go camping! :)

I have done a lot of googling already about what's flowering when - but sometimes it's better to get the info from someone who knows what you're looking for if that makes sense... I wasn't trying to be lazy - just seeing if a beek has experience with the mallee from a beeks perspective

the-ecohouse.com

mainly acacias (but not many of these) if i recall correctly, there is some mallee trees in bloom but i cant remember which ones.

i'll have a look and take some pics when im down there next time

Lone

Oz, there are some good 10 dog nights in Victoria in winter for sure.  You don't sound lazy, going from 0-20 hives in about a year.  I was wondering if you'd secured an apiary site in Little Desert?

Lone

the-ecohouse.com

did you get one in the ballot?

Awesome!!!

Thanks Lone :) and yeah, it certainly can get cold! Going to be finishing this season with 50 hives :) and yeah, got access to a site up in the mallee...

Oz, you really are going ahead in leaps and bounds. What do you do with all the honey? How have you found markets?
