Bee Culture Magazine Published My Vacuum Design

Last year, on this forum, I posted a link on an inexpensive BeeVac you can make by using a 5 Gal. bucket shop vac. The February issue of BeeCulture magazine came out yesterday and they had an article on my vac. The article on how to make it is on page 62 and 63. I hope it helps out people who want one. Thank you BeeCulture magazine for publishing the vacuum design.

Congratulations, it is always nice to be published. Did you get paid for it? I have been fortunate enough to write some articles for specialized hobby stuff and been paid for it. That is really cool....not much money, just the token.

okbees, how has it worked as far as bee mortality goes? Does the bucket vac seem to have enough suction to add an extension to the vacuum hose?

I have used two hose lengths of extension and had to increase the suction..but, I have not seen an increase in any bee mortality by increasing the suction. Be sure and not forget the piece of carpet on the 90 degree angle going into the top of the vacuum. Thanks on the word file....receive a PDF yesterday from a Beek, so I think I am good. Hope it works for you, like it has for us. A note on this, is that there are others out there that work as well or maybe better, but this style is very functional and inexpensive to make.

I seen that beevac in the BC magazine, looks easy enough to make and it looks very functionable and portable as well!! Gonna have to sit down on a rainy night and make one!!

I like Robo's vac, but I don't have the equipment set up to build it, one day maybe. I can build your design. Your vac is about the easiest and least expensive to build that I've seen and it is also apparently a good functional design. Nice job!!!

I saw this in the magazine. I am a little unclear on how the carpet works and why you couldn't just eliminate the 90 degree turn and go with a straight hose?

You can cut the 90 off of the hose, but on that model of vac the hose then wouldn't fit securely in the intake of the shop vac.
