My husband and I recently bought 5 acres in Milton, Wisconsin. We currently have 3 goats and plans to add an aquaponic system, bees, chickens and beef in the spring.

Welcome. Pet, meat, or milk goats?

Welcome, Five Acres! I had to look up 'aquaponic system' (it never crossed my ears before). What an ingenious idea - fish plus veges.

High 5, it sounds like you are going to be VERY busy next spring.  :)

There is a local farmer around me who does the aquaponic thing.  He's been on local TV and gets lot of interest since it is an unusual thing to do in crop country.  I haven't been on a tour of this place yet, but I would love to see it the next time he has an open house.  Unfortunately my favorite fish is Salmon.  They've got them in Lake Michigan, but I'm too far inland.  I wonder if they farm Salmon in the Lakes?  That would be a cool business.

Just getting used to this site so I apologize for the delayed response :-)

asprince: Our three goats are pets but we're not ruling out raising a few extra for meat. If we didn't have day jobs off the farm we'd consider milking but that's much further out.

BlueBee: salmon would be a great fish to raise, unfortunately I think the amount of water they need to live and the temp would be the toughest to overcome in a aquaponic system  :-(  Lake Perch would be a desirable fish for us to raise in this area.
