This my first year keeping bees and things have gone well.  This morning I noticed approx. 100 dead bees in front of the hive when I went out to check on their water.  Does anyone have any idea would could have happened?

Sounds normal to me.  Bees in a strong hive die at a rate of a thousand or more a day from old age and overwork.

Ditto MB, also this is the time that hives start killing off drones so the bigger bee makes it easier to spot the pile of dead ones.
