I might do a 3 cycle sugar thing (1 week apart) to encourage them to get rid of the bulk of mites before cold weather.

That trick is humbug. It has been verified that it does not work. 80% of mites are under brood cappings. No stuff affect on them.

In warm climates where there is no brood brake, mite treatment is difficult.

One way is take frood frames away, if they are only couple. Then give oxalic acid trickling and you get very good results.
But even if there are brood brake, trickling does not work alone. You need  thymol or formic acid treatment before autrumn that winter bees are not violated by mites.

Then you have Beatles method: Let It Be

I try. Mites won't let me. Hi Finski.
Happiness is a pollen forager in February

My inspection today revealed the following:

Bees 6.5 frames  about 14,000
Brood 2 frames, very tight pattern in upper deep.
Honey/nectar 2.5 frame
Pollen 0.25 frames.
Treated with API var life.  Closed screened bottom and reduced entrance.  I also stopped feeding, will resume in three weeks.
Killed one shb and had very few in trap.
Killed two water bugs (eastern nc roach)
Killed one moth.

Our winter averages are low 50 s F.

I also saw the queen she was quite fat.

Bees don't seem to like the API var life.  Lot of them hanging out outside the hive.  Big traffic jam too.
