Latitude 47.40 and some is seeing the beginning of the main flow.  The leafy spurge and hounds tongue are still blooming big with their nasty dark nectar and now the yellow sweet clover (in short supply) and alfalfa are starting to bloom.  Looks really really promising for a big crop here.

I see sumac coming in nicely and wild parsnip starting to bloom. Thistle will be real soon.

Sago's are strange plants. They go for years with no blooms then the produce pollen, looks like a  large beige pine cone.  Maybe a couple of times and then they produce a large hidden flower that produces a lot of red poison balls about the size of a large raddish. If your dog chews on it, they die. Even if you get them to a vet. The vet will tell you there is nothing they can do.

GOLDENROD!

At our meeting last night one of the state bee guys was there. He is from Russell county. He was working his hayfields in Arab, Al and saw a couple of goldenrod plants blooming. From this he speculates an early cool down this year.

I have a large Sago and it does put out a huge thing with pollen...never saw bees on it...and have never seen the little red balls but will look for them and get rid of them. Dogs, cats, raccoons, possums, armadillos all frequent my yard. Thanks

Carol,
I learned about the red balls being poisonous when a friends dog was chewing on them and got sick. She took it to the vet right away. The vet cold not anything to save the dog.

the sumac flow is on in middle georgia.  plants are in all stages, some heads are set, some are being worked and some buds haven't opened.  popped the top on a split i made in early summer and they are drawing out foundation in the second 5 frame deep.  looks like i need to split my non production hives this weekend if i want any more comb drawn out before goldenrod comes in.

Golden rod is starting to come on good here in Southern Indiana, Hope we get a good year to give the girls a good supply for winter.

I was in a couple of my hives today. I can definitely smell golden rod. Funny thing though, I did not smell it in all of the hives.
