We got a cold front that moved in with some rain and hail. It got down to 38 at night and was 55 during the day. It did warm up to 60 but later and it didn't last long. Anyway, I went down to see if they were clustered and saw some dead bees on the landing board right at the entrance. They were all inside the hive but as soon as they saw me, they started coming in and out for security, I think.

Did they get caught off guard by this cold front?

Yes or these girls died and the bees moved then to the front, if it was many I woudn't worry about it.

Rookie,
I had the same thing happen.
I opened the hive to feed and there were a lot of living bees inside.  I wasn't too concerned, Gary has it right.
In our area a lot of drones are being escorted from the hive as well.

Rookie,
They may not have died. If it did not actually freeze, they may wake up. Next time put one in your hand and see if it wakes up after it warms up.
