With all your help in another post, I have a plan to install a 5 frame medium nuc into an 8 frame medium box with the remaining frames foundationless. The plan was to, when they've made progress on those frames, add the second box with foundationless frames to the BOTTOM, underneath the brood. Is there any harm or advantage to just installing them in the top box as planned but already having the bottom empty box in place at installation? Any harm in having all that room from the outset?

If you have some experience fixing cross comb.. no.   Giving them a full box of foundation-less comb can result in comb running from corner to corner across the frames.  You have about a 60% chance they will draw everything as desired. If you have some drawn comb or foundation to break up the large open space they will have less room to mess up.  I use a LOT of foundation-less frames... because I am cheap... but I do have foundation.. often it is thin surplus in my frames to keep the bees aligned.

I'm with Ol Mech on this one. All foundationless could lead exactly where he says unless you keep it trimmed to keep it straight.

I prefer to limit their space until the weather is warmer.  I would put a five frame nuc in the middle of a ten or eight frame box and put an empty frame in the middle of the brood nest and one on each edge of the brood nest (meaning a frame of honey may be outside that).  IF you want to add another box try to put a drawn comb in the box if you have it (and with a nuc you should have a couple of frames that are not brood that could server that purpose).

I'll stick with original plan then. Thanks for the advice.
