I have a small swarm in a plywood box, the size of a 5 frame nuc. the entrance is a 1 inch diameter hole. the box is sitting on a table, and the entrance is about 2 inches from the table. there is no landing board.
I have noticed some of the bees come out of the hive and fall onto their backs before flying off. is this usual behaviour?

Sometimes if there's dew they get tripped up. The dew creates somewhat of a suction when they try to get upright.

Maybe the plywood is too slippery and they're falling off trying to get airborne. Set something under the hole so they got something horizontal to take off from.
