This is my first year with bees. I have 2 hives. I was told I should register my bees with the state for if someone got stung. That way I can't be sued. Don't know how true that is. I need to check into it. I want to register them with the state so I can get help if I have a problem with the bees .

Check with local bee clubs. Here in GA. Not required to reg. Really no registry for hobbiest. Google you state Ag. Dept beekeeping requirements.

Each and every state has different requirements at this time. It seems like a lot of states in New England are going to be moving the same way. Of course this will take a few years. Joint a local Bee Club or the State Association in my opinion they could help you a lot.

Jim, a few? (lol)

Roger, I've never heard of having to register them if someone got stung. In Alabama we're required to register them. One of the reasons is disease tracking - I suppose. I have over 30 hives, cost me $12, if I need it the state apiary person will come and do an inspection on my hives. Once the results are in they'll send me a report. So very much worth $12.
When the law no longer protects you from the corrupt, but protects the corrupt from you - then you know your nation is doomed.

Here in FL, all hives are required to be registered. If you follow the States Best Methods and Practices it will help in case you are sued. No guarantees.

If somebody smells money, you can be sued -- no matter whether you follow "best practices" or not.  I carry a $1 million "umbrella policy" to be on the safe side (don't tell anybody).  Then the insurance company's lawyer has to defend me.  The other defense is to not have anything they can reach, I guess.

The problem with trying to get Bee insurance is that a lot of insurance co. will cancel your policy the minute they find out you have bees. Not a good thing when you live in a state like FL where it is very hard to get home insurance.

Lucky here in GA.Jim. GA.insurance commissioner had added to beekeeping bill that your insurance can't be cancelled for having bees in hives on properties. But that hasn't stopped the from trying to cancel homeowners insurance when people ask about coverage when I do cutouts. They make as beeing infected home. They even tried to cancel one customer who is a lawyer say that honeybees were consider infestation same as rats and birds. She had to threaten lawsuit and report to commissioner to get them to cover it. They still easier her premium for filing a claim and stating that there was increased potential for lost due to future infestations.

John

Insurance is just a strong arm extorsion who don't want and will due anything legal or illegal to prevent payout of claims.  But they go after people who make end runs and use there on loop holes.

The problem in Florida is having all those hurricanes and stuff.  What's the highest point in Florida?  Build on the high ground and you're still under water when the rain comes and wind blows.  I have in-laws there and like to visit, but looked at moving there and thought about all the problems that go with paradise.

Dallas,
My farm is on one of the higher elevations and it is only about 110'. My house in town is only 34' above sea level and it is one of the highest points in this area.  If global warming was real I probably would have water front property.
Most people in FL are within 10 to 15 feet above sea level.
I often look at new homes that are being built around 5' above high tide.
Not for me.

I looked in the Fort Myers area and all they wanted to show was waterfront property -- same as on Texas Gulf Coast.  I guess they're saving land farther in for when the waterfront moves.

And in Florida if you ain't above ground level you will possible be way below ground level if the ground gives way to sink hole. If your in house that sinks like the man how was in his bed when his home went they only listened for sound and never went down because it was way to dangerous. So after 4 days not hearing anything they presumed he was gone. They filled the hole with his body still down there. They estimated he could be 40 feet or more down because of the debris. They just pushed the rest of the house in and filled it with dirt and sand. Two years later and it's still settling they have added 5 feet of sand on top each year.

John

Sorry guys but six feet under good enough for me.

Yes, then you can sell the waterfront all over again...

Thanks for all the input. I have been meeting with the local bee club in Lafayette, TN. I was told I don't have to register but it is a good idea.
