I posted this on an old thread, but was hoping to get some up to date input from y'all.

So I am a first year beek.  I figure if I start out right, it will be easier to stay on top of all this.  I have looked at hive tracks and beetight fairly in depth.  Is there really any major differences or is it mostly just the interface that is different?

Huh?  "hive tracks?"  " beetight?"

Maybe I'm not awake yet, but I don't understand the question given those terms.

Okay, I looked at previous entries and apparently "hive track" is software you use to record what you did to a hive and, though I didn't find anything specific about "beetight," I assume it's similar software.

What's the point of either?  Unless you have a lot of hives, notes on paper are easier to use.  Think about getting hive goop all over a tablet's screen if you carry it to the hives or transferring notes from paper to a tablet after a day in the hives.  I do well to keep up with hive tools without having to look for a tablet as well.  Good luckwith your bees.

Once you get a smart phone you need to put all kinds of apps on it to justify the cost of the phone.  :-)

Never mind these old guys, they still communicate with bricks. ;)

In seriousness, I'm a second 'year,  and did some investigation into digital record keeping.  I've decided that I don't want to share my data with them if they don't want to share the aggregate dataset with me.

Best app for a new bee is a combo of this here tapatalk and the camera.

Here's a fresh discussion of the two apps you're asking about. http://beemaster.com/forum/index.php?topic=43605.0

I've looked at both of those apps. The pricing is a turn off for me.

Check out this article. At the bottom is a list of worksheets and references. http://www.beeculture.com/dont-know-can-hurt/

I suggest making a Google Sheets document from these sources that you can fill out with each inspection. You can call up the entry form on your device by saving a shortcut to the URL to the home screen.

I use an old iPhone tethered to the personal hotspot on the new, clean phone in the protection of my pocket. The old phone has a nice patination of propolis and wax. I can take photos, videos, tapatalk, whatever.

I've been thinking about this since I saw this topic. Beetight offers a free to use with only a few hives. I think six are free. More than that and you have to pay to use. Devehfs post has a good link. I like the u of florida sheet. Trying to decide if I want to print a ton off and just fill one out each time or if I want to laminate and keep in the hive. Less printing with lamination but more difficult to review past findings.
Keeping bees since 2011.

Also please excuse the typos.  My iPad autocorrect can be brutal.
