My neighbor planted about 1/2 an acre of sunflowers and they are in full bloom right now. Just wondering if they are good for a honey crop or only good for pollen?
Thanks

paus

I planted about the same acreage last year I did not see one honey bee on them lots of bumble bees.  I plan on planting next week hopefully so they come into full bloom during the dearth in late summer.  I planted Lemon Queen Sunflower variety, the most recommended variety for honey bees.  I have questions but no answers.

I seldom see honey bees on sunflowers.

Something is coming in right now even with all the rain. I was over by the hives this afternoon and could smell honey ripening. :)

Beeboy,
I was outside today and the popcorn trees (Chinese Tallow) are in full bloom and the bees are all over them. I saw these trees with blooms last week and thought they would be done by now. I?m glad we have something good I?m bloom.

We have taken honey off commercial sunflowers, 25 acres with 50 hives, also very yellow wax.

My Chinese Tallow trees are going to bloom soon. I can?t wait!

So what is your question?   Maybe I have the answer.
Yes, there is a bee operation here to harvest the sunflower honey all summer long when they bloomed.  Harvest every 2
weeks when no other crops are around.

Beepro, I was wondering if the sunflowers would produce any honey, thanks for the answer.
