Rumor?

Misinformation?

A drone laying queen lays sterile drones....

I had never heard of this and really doesn?t make any sense.

Possible but not likely.
I have been around bees a long time, since birth.  I am a hobbyist so my answers often reflect this fact.  I concentrate on genetics, raise my own queens by wet graft, nicot, with natural or II breeding.  I do not sell queens, I will give queens  for free but no shipping.

How do you know the drones are sterile?
Other than by dissection and testing the sperm.

Plus if a laying worker can produce productive drones then.....

Drone laying queens lay regular drones.  Unless acted upon by something else (chemicals in the wax etc.) they will be fertile viable drones.  The same with laying workers.  Their offspring are viable drones.  Now diploid drones never make it to adults because the bees remove them.  IF they could make it to adults maybe they could be sterile or not.  I have not been able to get a straight answer from the experts.
