the trunk monkey place is suburban ford in sandy.  i got my last two trucks from them and my son bought a mustang there.  pretty good place to do business, in my experience.  they don't try to show me the vanity mirror in the passenger side when i go look at trucks.

Dane, I am pretty sure that that is a drone congregation area.  I didn't think that they were so close to the colonies, but then I don't know much about this aspect.  I love the look of the layout of your colonies by the way.  I can't wait to hear what happens throughout the summer and how much pollen/honey/goodies you gather, hee, hee, you remember what you did last year, you made us all so envious  :-P :) :) :)

The drone congregation areas are about 30-60 feet or so above ground, if my memory serves me well, I really think that is what is happening here, not swarming.  That is pretty coool.  Have a most wonderful and beautiful day.  Cindi
There are strange things done in the midnight sun by the men who moil for gold.  The Arctic trails have their secret tales that would make your blood run cold.  The Northern Lights have seen queer sights, but the queerest they ever did see, what the night on the marge of Lake Lebarge, I cremated Sam McGee.  Robert Service

Greg ~> I had the same experience you described just today (see below).

Kathy ~> I thought the trunk monkey was that car anti-theft "device".

Cindi ~> you & Brian may both be right.   It's definitely a reorientation "hub" as Brian described, but could be drone congregation as well.  It definitely wasn't a swarm.  Thanks for the kind words regarding the layout.  I'm glad I expanded up to the terrace.  It gives an excellent vantage from behind, above, in-front & below - really easy access as well.  The lower deck, which was the original locale, is still a good spot and has the other half of the hives.  I couldn't believe it myself last year.  There is some unreal production here and I feel really blessed/lucky.  I may be overwhelmed this year!  :-P

The swarm finally left today... and, amazingly enough after 7+ days of setting up there, at the exact moment I was watching.  It was pretty cool to see!  8-)  They started peeling off from the bottom and "melting up" above the tree top into a big swirling mass.  Once all the bees were in the air the entire thing drifted away across the wetlands... no idea where really.  I was hoping they'd come to my swarm trap - I see a lot of visitors.  No worries - with the splits I've already done, the rest already supered up for some time, it's a bee-storm around here!

Anyone notice that drones are the last to re-orient after a move?  I've got a bunch that keeping going to where their hives were.

Heat-wave is on-deck for next few days.  I'll keep an eye on the "bee hub".

Cheers,
Dane
