Got a call at work today from my DH.  "Where are you?", I ask..."Urgent Care". he responds...

Seems he was looking at the hive when 2 girls flew over to him, one lit on his upper lip near the nostril...know wha he did? Brushed it...STING...lip swelled head and feet started to itch profusely, he turned beet red from head to umbilicus, eyes began to swell and water, pulse raced...HE DROVE HIMSELF to the Urgent Care...Blood Pressure 80/60 and pulse 120...  Benaryl 50 mg IM and SoluMedrol IM...ice to site...and home about one hour later...He looks so funny...he has been stung before on the extremities...never had a problem...oh brudder!

We are going to make a sting kit with liquid benadyl, pepcid ac and epi-pen...scarey thing is he rides all over the US on his Harley...back roads etc...gonna make him a pack "to go" as well!

Yeah that sounds like a good idea. My wife is making me carry a sting kit now too. The script for the epi-pen was real easy to get, she just mentioned bees and the Dr. wrote it. She was real worried about my arm this last time as the swelling made it all the way up to my elbow. I am going to have to start wearing gloves for awhile.

It is odd, I thought the more one was stung, the less chance for reaction...hhhmmm, but practically in the nostril,  I suppose is problematic...

I think having an epi-pen around is a great idea. You never know when a visitor may step on a bee or get stung some other way and need it. Better to always have one and end up throwing them out when they expire than need one and not have it.

Benadryl now comes in those quick dissolve strips you put on your tongue - much easier to store in the bee kit/in your pocket than the liquid.

I also have the epi-pen but keep it in the house as it is temperature sensitive.

no.  one could be stung many times with little reaction, and then be stung and die.  that is not common, but it can happen.  also, different sting bring about different reactions.  i have had small stings that have done nothing more than itch, and large stings that have cause swelling of entire limb, or large portions of torso.

That makes sense.  I was nailed 15 times once and they just itched.  I got it on my finger another time and my whole hand throbbed and ached for three days.  Not to mention some pretty good swelling.  I would think I'm not going to have a deadly reaction though.  After all, I have been stung several times throughout life and my throat never swelled shut.

I've found that the sting results are often a matter of location.  Getting stung near or in vital areas (nostrils, eyes, lips) seem to produce the most problems from swelling.  Being stung in the mouth or nostrils can be life threatening from swelling even if you're basically immune to be stings.  Getting Stung in places where blood vessels are close to the skin surface (like the back of the hand) can cause problems with heart and lungs or at locations a good distant from the actual sting site.

For me, in the most part, I can get stung and have little or no reaction.  I usually don't swell, hurt for more than a minute, or even itch.  Getting stung where the poison can enter the blood stream or in sensitive areas are a whole different matter even though I'm considered immune.

I have been stung in the face many times with little effect (other than pain. I keep waiting for that mythical day when it doesnt hurt to get stung).

However... If I get stung anywhere on the hands or fingers, I swell like crazy! So far that is my only bad reaction site. I have to wear gloves.
