Well call me stupid...it was dusk, things looked to be quieting down at the hive...I meandered over, which I have done over the past 8 weeks or so...I noticed some small gnattype bugs on the outside of the hive...hhhmmm I thought, maybe I will rub some orange oil stuff on them so they will do away...so I got some of the stuff...put a dab on a burlap...an rubbed the outside of the top of the hive...bad idea...out from seemingly nowhere, came one girl...she buzzed my head and chased me all the way to the house...must have been a site...after a few minutes I went out tothe other side of the house to water...guess who found me!  I went back inside til darkness fell! Live and learn...

May have disturbed them by vibration. Plus the time it was made it worse. and yes, they will chase you.
I have one or two follow me several yds every time I work mine. Maybe one that was out in the field returning and didn't get any smoke. But after sundown is a bad time to try to do anything around the hive.
I think their defence mecanisum is higher at night than in day time. My thought.

Aren't they quite attracted to citrus? Someone here had a problem with chasing after using some sort of citrus shampoo, I remember.

I been chased at least twice, once after I hived a package went later that evening to retrieve the syrup can and a bee chased me and stung me, then this past week when working the hives got chased by a girl she got me  :'(

Cindi

Sharon, ooooh ya, they can chase ya, and will do their best to get you.  Never forget the time my husband wanted to get his beer that he forgot up around the apiary.  I was working the hives and disturbing them, probably irritating them too, they probably thought I was a robber

He said that he saw the bee coming right for him.  Yep, she was gonna get him.  She stung him right between the eyes.  He looked liked some kind of alien.  The worst part was, that afternoon we had to go to a funeral......try and explain that one to people.  Have a wonderful day, best of this life, the sun is gonna shine, after days and days of rain.  Cindi

ain't that a truth!!!
swelling stings MUST occur, one day prior to event of some kind, where there'll be lot's of photographs and people...

i'd say that besides getting stund in the fingers 90% of other sting places were either the eyes or the nose, got stung in the nose just today!

Man oh man have I ever been chased. Ive been chased all most a mile down the road. I woud stop and get and to see and thay was still after me. Thay was hiting the windshild and that was only the 2et week after I got started with bees lol. It was just right up the road from me. Now I have the hives all requeend for the lady that had the swarm. Now there a lot better thay might get after me for about 8 feet. But she had not done any thing with the hives in 2 or so years.

I don't know if this counts as "chased" since the bee flew maybe 1 inch, but I pried up my inner covers today to put in the cheap wooden entrance reducers to create a top entrance. The first hive had no problems whatsoever. I pulled up the top cover without a hive tool, no smoke, no problems. The second hive, I had to go get the hive tool even to get it loose. I pried it loose, and walked away, since there were more bees there at the top than the other hive. When I walked back, all of the girls seemingly ducked down inside, so i thought all was clear. I reached over to put the reducer near the edge, and the bee zipped up from between the two closest frames, landed on my thumb, and stung before I even knew what was going on. She was stuck there, too, I had to shake my hand several times to dislodge her, then I picked out the stinger. My thumb is a little sore and a little swollen, but nothing terrible. My first sting, too. :(

Michael's comment reminded me of the time I asked a neighbor if he had seen any deer lately. His answer was, not since this morning. :-D

hehehehe Cindi!! naaah, i just heat my knife and press it on the spot of stinging. it really helps. but if i get an "eye shot" i do both, the heated knife and plantain. helps 100% i swell a bit for about 2 hours, but there's no swelling the next morning and stuff.

I have been chased by bees so many times that i can't begin to remember them all.  I have to reduce it down to the more memorable ones--like the time I was 14 and was hired to work a hive that hadn't bee worked in 5 years.  That hive was BIG and MEAN.  They ended up chasing me 2 blocks down the street and my Dad counted 379 seperate bee stings.  I got real sick, but I didn't give up beekeeping.  That is one you remember.
