As always with anything I learn I find I only have more questions. When an old bee can no longer fly is it allowed to remain in the hive and do other work until, with addeled senses, it is dragged from the hive?

Understudy

It is usually pushed out of the hive. If it can't contribute it is a waste of resources.

Often the old bee will fly off to die, or perhaps it will just not make it back or get caught out after dark.  Sad...but that is a bee's life.  :-D

Normally the loss of flying ability co-incides with the loss of digesting sugar ability.
