Has anyone in America ever kept the Japanese Honey Bee, because of their developed defense system against predators like hornets and such? Or is this just not the right climate for them?

dpence

Humm...I maybe wrong but I think the USDA controls importation of honeybees so I am not sure anyone here could get a Japanese honeybee.

Bennettoid

They don't produce  as well as Europeans.

No passport no entry.

I don't think the USDA would allow them into the US.

That doesn't mean they aren't going to be able to get in Brendhan.

Same thing with drugs being smuggled over the border ;)

Good thing they aren't as productive as other strains.

While that is true. It has not happened to a great degree in regards to bees. And if there is any species of bee you need to worry about getting here it is the Cape Bee. If that thing hits the US then the beekeeping industry is in real trouble.

What they do is smuggle queens in queen cages in their shirt pockets. The problem is that there may not be the drones for her to succesfully mate with. The inbreeding results in a mongaloid bee. We are having that problem in South Bay ecause someone brought in Apis meliferia meliferia (German Black Bee) and they don't mate with Italian drones. So we have a mongoloid aggressive bee that is going to become a problem.

Shirt Pockets?? That doesn't sound very smuggler type to me!!! I would definately not trust a guy who smuggles in his shirt pockets.

Not to be anal about it  but I think that if they tried to get those queens over here there would probably be one of hornets hiding in the package somewhere and then we'd really be up the crick.

Our bees can do do mostly fine against our wasps right now.  Probably better than the  Japanese Honeybees do against the japanese hornets.

Yeah, sitting on a 12 hour flight (Tokyo to Seattle) with a queen cage up the posterior would definately require visiting the Bathroom.  Domo Alrigato!!
