Did you think I wanted to fool with this thing? Nope, but I knew who did. You will have to ask him the details, see I babysat this thing in my backyard for a little while, was gonna let them overwinter in there just like that, they were happy after all. Got to talkin' to Bailey about this hive thing from another dimension and he said he wanted a challenge so I gave him one! Bahahahahahahahahaha!!! :-D :-D :-D :-* http://picasaweb.google.com/pyxicephalus/ABigMessButTheyReHappy

this is the one that had so little comb after trying to hive it.

i am going to open this one later today and confirm i got the queen when i hived it.

there was not 1 frame of straight comb in the whole bucket!
they are happy and taking feed well.

challenge it was, but it was more bees!
will report my findings after inspection today.

John, I will let Bailey respond since he did the hard part, well I did one difficult thing, They were originally in a plastic garbage can, filled with pipe fittings. The bees had built comb in between the wall of the garbage can and the white 5 gallon inverted bucket that you see. There was a little comb inside the bucket and some in the bottom of the garbage can and in between some of the fittings. The entire thing with the fittings I will venture a guess and say weighed somewhere in the neighborhood of 175lbs or more, so there was no way of getting that thing on my trailer. What I did was to cut below where I thought the hive ended, into the garbage can, and placed that section, bucket and all into the black plastic planter you see. It was a big mess because some of the comb extended down and in between some of the fittings. They were very nice bees and lots of them. I drove and met Bailey at a half way point between our two homes and he adopted the hive. He can say what happened from there.

i say put a screen under all of it and one of them dome top garbage can lids and let'em go.maybe a spigot on one side of the can for honey flow.i personally think it looks kinda cool.i'll bet you would have all kinds of trouble gettin that 5 gal buckt out of there.

funnel cake is a pretty good discription of this hive!

i didnt get much comb from their hive but i did rob some comb from a stronger hive and have given it to them.

i checked them today and they are doing well and building a proper hive.

it was an experience trying to salvage as much comb as possible from that tangled mess but you do what is needed when the bees are free ;)
