Web Cam on the Hive

What would you recommend for an outside wed cam or IP camera for my hive.
Want to set it so anyone can veiw it 24/7 on my own site or directly from my computer.

I can get a wire to it in about 50 feet

Okay here are the issues you are facing.

Your distance is to long for usb (maximum run on usb without amps is 15 feet)
You will need to either have power at the camera location (not likely)
or carry power along with the cable to the camera.

You can use something like
Amazon.com DLINK Camera
However you will need to use this item with the camera:
POE adapter

You want to also make sure you have a weatherproof enclosure.
Also make sure the cat 5 cable is rater for outdoor use preferable direct burial. It costs a little more but it won't degrade like indoor cat 5 cable. Using indoor cat 5 cable outside will deteriorate over time.

I looked at your recommendations.
But how secure is the connection,,,do these come with software with a firewall.
I have 3 computers and only 1 with software new enough to run these cameras (Vista) the other 2 are 98SE.
The Vista machine is very important and would hate to have it hacked due to poor firewall protection due to opening ports for the camera.

It is a connection you make to either you hub or with a crossover to your computer.

The ports open on the camera only really affect the camera. You can run it behind you firewall.

There are many things you can do to keep it secure.

I've been considering it... I've got a giant piece of nice glass from a coffee table my wife no longer wants... but I don't have glass for the other side yet... drat.
