Question:

For a new hive, is it normal for inside of the bottom board be grayish color from the bees? Is this could be propolis?

Michael Bush

Could be a lot of things including mold, propolis, chewed up newspaper, dried syrup... what is it's consistency and it's texture?

I used my hive tool to scrape it. The consistency and texture is soft and slippery with yellowish under the thin gray layer. I know it is not newspaper, I didn't use any. When I opened my hive today, on two frames I thought saw two mold spots. So, I scrape them off.

Sounds like it could be mold. Are you using a screen bottom board?

No, I am not using a screen bottom board not yet. That is my next option.
