Refractometer?

Do you need to have a refractometer to work the honey. Or do you let the bees just take care of it. Just wondered seen some less expensive ones on Ebay, thought about getting one. Should I ? Or is it just a waste of money?

I can't afford a good refractometer so I just let the bees tell me when it's time to harvest honey.  As long as it is capped I have not had a problem.  In the mean time I will save my pennies and buy what I need by priority.  Right now that is woodenware. ;)

I had one until I lost it in one of my many moves.  It's not essential.  I work on 90% sealed honey which seems to be OK.

Folks, sorry if I have to revive this thread.

My office team mate would be on business trip to Dallas Texas next month, and I was thinking of asking him to buy me a good refractometer. Its way cheaper to buy it in the US (and handcarry it back to Philippines) compared to the threefold price when it reaches our shores (due to taxes, shipping, etc).
Can someone recommend a good brand/model and maybe an outlet/website where my friend can do the purchase?
