i'm going to put up an electric fence. Any idea on the volts or joules of energy needed? Neighboring bear management thought only a .5 joule but was unsure.

Get the "weed killer" type of fence charger, it packs an extra wallop.

Not sure on how much juice to give but we have a beekeeper in the north country here that ties a few strips of raw bacon on the wire. One lick and they don't come back for a while.

you can also use peanutbutter in some aluminium foil  over the wires of the fence .  works like the bacon...   the bigger the jolt the better the smaller fences are not strong enough to keep the bears out  I was told 9000 volts which is around 5 or 6 joules   The beek who told my friend said he has bears come by and see the foil on the fence  and just keep going I guess they remember what happened when they took a bite!!  this beek has not lost a hive to bears since he put the fence up years ago
