Last night the guest speaker (entomologist at NCSU for 30 years specializing in bees) talked about the history of beekeeping. He showed a slide of a lady's fireside chair from the 1800s. Beside the chair was an elaborately embroidered screen about 2' x 2' attached to a wooden stand. It looked somewhat like a music stand but the screen was vertical and would have shielded the lady from shoulders up from the fire.

This was a face screen, used to prevent the intense heat of the fire from melting her beeswax makeup! Apparently when diseases like smallpox left facial scars, women used a beeswax foundation to fill the pock marks or scars and then applied other colored cosmetics to complete the "mask."

I see from a quick google search that face makeup containing beeswax for covering wrinkles is currently for sale. Don't think I'd work a hive wearing it, though!

Hey, Eri!

Who was the speaker?

Heck, if you want the effect of botox for cheap, just let the bees sting your face.  That will take the wrinkles out!

Ahhh...yes, Dr. Ambrose!  He was once the head of NC state beekeeping association as well.
