Thanks for posting that for me. So this little bee is very aggressive when I get close. She /he hangs out around the sunflower and if I get too close she will chase me back to the house, buzzing around my head not stinging. Because I know she is not one of mibe she may not want to chase me musch longer, if you know what I mean.

JP

How large is that bee? It looks like a carpenter bee.

Shawn, no offense, but that bee looks to me, much larger than a honeybee. From the photos I think it is a carpenter bee.

Wow.  African Elephant Bee ? The counter point to small cell? Big bugger.
I was born about 100 years too early, or to late.

The photo doesn't make it that clear but I would venture one of the native bees known for being territorial.

The Hairy Footed Flower Bee for example seems to patrol flowers and wait for females to arrive at them. In the mean time they go after other insects. I know a number of digger bees greatly resemble honey bees but I'm not sure if they're active this late in the year.

DayValleyDahlias

Those kinds of bees visit my dahlia patch every year.  The actually spend the night on flowers.  And yes they are just a bit smaller than a honeybee and very stocky& fuzzy.

Shawn

Well I have to agree with JP. I googled the carpenter bee and saw a couple of bees that looked liked the one on the flower.

Orchard mason bee?
Japanese hornfaced bee?  http://www.pollinatorparadise.com/solitary_bees/Hornface.htm
These are the ones that spend the night on my fountain grasses.

Or click through some of these to see if they match.
