removing bee's from swarm traps

I have 2 traps out that have both had swarms in them for about 1 1/2 weeks now.  they are the style like Robo makes out of 12" sona tube with 4 deep frames.  What is the best way and time to remove these.  I thought the morning before they start flying.  I also wondered if I should give them a bit of smoke before opening them.
